Patrick, Hickman
Hickman Patrick was born January 7, 1914, to W. G. and Edith McKinney Patrick in Kimbrell, Kentucky. He grew
up in Hargett, KY in Estill County just a few miles from the homestead of his great-great grandfather Thomas
Patrick who homesteaded in the area now designated as Clark County before Kentucky was a state. In 1931, he
graduated from Alvan Drew School in Wolfe County, a Methodist boarding school, and in 1937 from Union College
in Barbourville, KY. For ten years, part of them while attending Union, he taught elementary school in one-room
schools in Estill County and in the Hargett Consolidated School, where he met Elise Sams. They married on June
12, 1940. In 1942, he graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and was honored as
Distinguished Alumnus from the Quicksand Region in 1981. He was an avid Kentucky Wildcat Basketball fan. In the
fall of 1942, he began a 38-year career of teaching Vocational Agriculture--in Lee County High School 1942-1948,
Owsley County High School 1948-1959, and Lee County High School 1959-1980. He taught many in these two counties,
advising them in FFA, supervising their farming programs, taking them on trips to FFA Camp, the Kentucky State
Fair, and the FFA conventions, encouraging them to find their place and do their best. Since agriculture was an
Essential Occupation during WWII, he contributed to the war effort by running a cannery, teaching adult farming
classes at night and supervising a Veteran’s Training Program in agriculture as the war ended. He was a lifetime
member of the Farm Bureau, having been a founding member of the Owsley County Chapter, organized in 1944. He served
on the board for several years and was president from 1982-1987. He was a member of the Booneville Lion’s Club and
served as its president. He was very interested in public libraries and the availability of books for his students
and community. As a teacher in the one-room schools, he carried books to his school from the Board of Education.
In Owsley County he served as the Chairman of the Owsley County Public Library Board of Trustees from 1974-1989.
While Chairman of the Board, he was instrumental in getting a bookmobile for Owsley County. Based on the work of
the Board of Trustees during his term of service as chairman, the trustees were awarded the 1990 Outstanding Board
of Trustees Award. He was a lifetime member of the Friends of the Owsley County Public Library. The library was
written up in the Lexington Herald as “The Little Library that Could” its success in building a library and
programs finding ways to fund this with little money. A generation of children in Owsley County along with his
grandchildren knew him as the “real” Santa Claus at the public library and a local retail business. He vividly
remembered making his profession of faith on Sunday morning as a young boy in Jackson’s Chapel United Methodist
Church and recalled how that day, as he rode home from church in the buggy between his father and mother, the
sun shone brighter than he had ever seen it. He supported this church for the rest of his life. He was a member
of the Booneville Methodist Church for 32 years serving as, Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School teacher
of high school-aged students for all of those years. He retired in 1980 and moved to Burgin, Kentucky in 1987,
where he became a member of the Burgin Methodist Church. He is survived by three of his four children: Frances

Peters, John H.
John H. Peters was born at home in Springhill, Indiana to Bill and Flora (Blake) Peters. A storied beginning, John was born in the former Springhill School House which his family had converted into their home a few years before
his arrival. When he was three years old, his family moved from Spring Hill to the New Point area. There, John graduated New Point School in 1945. In 1946, toward the end of World War II, John was called up to the US Army. From
1950-51, John served in Korea as a member of the 430th Construction Engineer Battalion. John never had a job he did not like, including his work as a bus driver for the school district beginning when he was just 16 years old.
He worked as a salesman for the Sears and Roebuck Catalog Store in Greensburg, Indiana for twenty-five years from 1958 until his retirement in 1983. Although, very few could say John ever retired, as he continued to work on his
farm for the next four decades. Many in Greensburg and throughout the region know John best for his love of small farm equipment. A salesman at heart, John routinely traveled to purchase, trade, and sell farm equipment all over
the state of Indiana and beyond. John also served eight years as a Decatur County councilman. It wasn’t just the sale of farm equipment that kept John busy, however, a tractor was usually pretty close by. John took enormous
pride in showing his rare 1962 Ford 4X4 Powermaster tractor at many antique tractor shows throughout the Midwest, and never missed the chance to drive it in the Annual Decatur County Parade. John, by the Masons of Indiana,
recently received the distinguished “50 Years a Past Master Award”. He was recognized as a Past Master in good standing of the Masonic Fraternity for a period of 50 years or more. He considered this a great honor. More
important than his army service, sales acumen, and rare farm equipment combined, John was a dedicated and loving family man. On November 2,1952, John married the love of his life, Nola Sebastian at the Sandcreek Baptist
Church. John and Nola enjoyed seventy years of marriage, and it was rare to find one too far away from the other. Together, John and Nola had four children and took pride in creating a generous and hardworking family. John
always said, "Keep everything simple, don't make life too complicated." This was the best piece of knowledge he used and demonstrated in his own life, as long as you keep things simple, the easier and happier life can be. John
is survived by his wife Nola Peters, son Danny Peters and his wife Bonnie, son Duane Peters, daughter Debbie and her husband Tom Lawson, and daughter Jan and her husband Donald Ziegenfus, as well as 7 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two siblings, Ruth Ainsworth and Donald Peters, both of Greensburg, along with many close extended Peters and Sebastian family members. John was preceded in death by his parents,
sister Norma Lee Peters, Maude Kathryn (Peters) Hazelrigg, Mary Margaret (Peters) Maynard, Thelma (Peters) Overhauser, and brothers William “Bill” Peters, and Dale Peters. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 3, 2022
from 4 to 7:00 p.m. at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg followed by Masonic services at 7:00 p.m. conducted by the New Point Masonic Lodge #255. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the
funeral home with Rev. Brad Douglas officiating. Burial with full military graveside services will follow at the South Park Cemetery in Greensburg. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Indiana Honor Flight or

blossomed for Nola at Kresge’s Five and Dime in Hamilton, Ohio, where she met her future husband, John Peters, thanks to an introduction by her brother Dan, who had become friends with John during their service in Korea. Their
marriage on November 2, 1952, at the Sandcreek Baptist Church in Greensburg was a celebration of their lifelong commitment to each other, a union that lasted nearly 70 years until John's passing just days before their anniversary
in 2022. A passionate gardener, Nola's love for the earth was evident in her abundant vegetable and fruit gardens. She found joy in the simplicity of nurturing life from the ground up, embracing the entire process from tilling
to harvesting. Her dedication to preserving her garden's bounty through canning and freezing spoke volumes of her commitment to living a life grounded in the values of hard work and self-sufficiency. Nola's love for the outdoors
extended to her enjoyment of Florida's sunny beaches during the winter months. She was a devoted mother, choosing to stay at home to raise her children and care for her youngest siblings after the tragic loss of their mother in
1960. Later, Nola and John ventured into entrepreneurship, owning and operating the Merle Norman Cosmetic Store in Greensburg, further embedding themselves in the fabric of the community. Residing in Greensburg, 4 miles East on
Highway 46, Nola and John's home was a hub of love, laughter, and countless memories. Nola is survived by her four children, Danny (Bonnie), Duane, Deb (Tom Lawson), and Jan (Don Ziegenfus), along with her adored grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild, who affectionately called her “Mamaw.” Her legacy also lives on through her surviving siblings and a large extended family who will forever cherish her memory. Nola's life, filled
with love, faith, and unwavering dedication to her family, leaves a lasting imprint on the Greensburg community. She will be remembered for her kindness, her resilience, and the love she so freely gave to all who were blessed
to know her. Love always outlives death. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM following
the visitation with Rev. Brad Douglas officiating. Burial will follow at the South Park Cemetery in Greensburg. Please consider in lieu of flowers donating to Sandcreek Baptist Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

radio station on a daily basis. On the weekends, she watched RFD-TV, The Cowboy Channel, which became a fond tradition. Working on jigsaw and crossword puzzles and spending time with family were also fun hobbies for Nora.
While the kids were growing up, she loved them being home, and Nora would cry every year when it was time for them to go back to school. Also during her younger days, she enjoyed vegetable gardening. In addition, she hosted
the holidays at her home for family and was known to cook delicious feasts and make the day special. During her birthday week, her sisters would visit and spend the week with her, which was one of her favorite traditions.
They would cook together, clean everything up, and then plan what they were going to cook next. Nora always looked forward to her birthday because of her “sister week” tradition. Growing up in a large family with very basic
means, Nora developed a mentality of needing little to get by and maintaining things beyond their normal lifespan. One year, when it was time for her to renew her driver’s license, she got into her car to head to the BMV
and decided to look at her previous license. She realized that she was wearing the same shirt, which was a testament to her keeping things nice year after year. Among many things, she will be remembered for her love of her
family and her faithful habit of always reading her Bible. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, in 2012; her parents, Mose and Viola (*Sebastian) Herald; two brothers, Wilson and Virgil Herald; and two sisters,
Cora Caudill and Vena Herald. She is survived by her son, John “Randy” (Stacey) Powell; daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Shutts; six grandchildren, Jeremiah Shutts, Brandy Shutts, Jenna (Tim) Johnson, Bethany Powell, Kenley (Bri)
Powell, and Josiah Powell; one brother, Walter (Phyllis) Herald; and five sisters, Linda (Kerwin) Kerr, Nancy (Ron) Bussell, Wanda Wright, Judy (Mike) Begley, Joyce (Mike) Baker. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m.
Wednesday, October 2, at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home in Waynesville. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery, Corwin. Pastor Joe Shutts will officiate. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 1 PM on Wednesday at the funeral

Powell, Viola Turner
Viola Powell, age 97 died on April 13, 2019. She was born in Island City, KY on July 8, 1921 and was raised in Owsley County, in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. She graduated from high school at age 16, and then went on to
earn a B.A. degree from Maryville College and a Masters Degree from the University of Kentucky. She served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and then returned to civilian life as a high school teacher in Owsley County.
Subsequently she moved to Hamilton, OH, married James M. (Mark) Powell, and worked at Ohio Casualty for more than thirty years until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. (Mark) Powell. She is
survived by her sister, Elsie (Pete) Barger; by seven children: John Williamson, Winona Shope, James H. (Herbert) Powell, Dessie Mae Kerr, Marlene Bailey, Alene McFarland, and Mark (Joe) Powell; by her very special niece,
Debbie Kuhlenbeck; and by grandchildren and great grandchildren too numerous to list. Viola never stopped being a teacher. She thirsted for knowledge, and was a voracious reader with an encyclopedic memory. She delighted in
reading to her children and grandchildren, and taught them her love of books. Viola was the daughter of John S. Turner, a Presbyterian minister, and Lola Turner. She was fortunate to grow up with two sisters and a brother
in a home in the country which was warm and happy and full of love. Her childhood took place in a different era. There was no TV, so they read and talked. There was no running water or indoor plumbing or central heat, so
they worked every day to supply those basics. There was no nearby grocery store, so they farmed, and canned, and milked cows, and gathered eggs, and butchered hogs, and picked blackberries, and gathered hickory nuts, and
they never wanted for anything. Self-sufficiency, thrift, hard work, and love of family were traits that came naturally to her. Viola played the pump organ and piano in church, and also played violin. She had a beautiful
singing voice, and treasured the old hymns. Late in life one of her favorite pastimes was listening to classical music. Her faith was deep and sustaining. She never put herself first. All of us who learned from her example
and teaching and were the recipients of her love and support owe her an immense debt of gratitude and will always keep her in our hearts. Visitation will be held at Venice Presbyterian Church, 4244 Layhigh Road, Ross, OH
45014 on Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 12:30 pm until the time of the funeral service at 2 pm. Burial will follow in Butler County Memorial Park in Hamilton, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of
Cincinnati. https://www.charlesyoungfuneralhome.com/ .
